Since being filmed in 2007, British ’60s-set drama ‘Hippie Hippie Shake’ has been firmly stuck in development hell, and now its star Sienna Miller says it’ll probably never see the light of day.

“I don’t know what’s happening [with ‘Hippie Hippie Shake’],” Sienna Miller told Yahoo Movies while promoting her new film ‘Live By Night’.

“I’m not sure whatever happened with that. I don’t think it’s… I don’t think we’ll see it at this point. I never really heard what happened. I did see a rough cut of it and it was a pretty beautiful film, but there was some legal something or other. I don’t know.”

The film, based on Australian writer Richard Neville’s memoirs about the launch of counterculture magazine Oz in the UK, shot on locations across London 10 years ago but was officially dropped from Working Title’s slate in 2011 despite promising early rough cut screenings.

It was first announced by Working Title in 1998, but in 2007 it was finally greenlit by Universal Pictures with ‘Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason’ director Beeban Kidron set to direct a script by her husband ‘Billy Elliot’ screenwriter Lee Hall, starring Cillian Murphy as Richard Neville and Sienna Miller as Neville’s girlfriend Louise Ferrier.

Both Hall and Kidron quit the production sometime during production, but some test screenings did take place and an early review on Aint It Cool News in 2008 praised the film’s “London locations, pounding sixties soundtrack and psychedelic visuals”.

In 2011 Richard Neville agreed that the film – said to feature a full frontal nudity scene with Sienna Miller – was “watchable” but had been shelved by Working Title for financial reasons, telling the Sydney Morning Herald: “Universal Pictures decided to shelve the film and save themselves a lot of tax payments.”

Sounds like ‘Hippie Hippie Shake’ has officially gone up in smoke.

‘Live By Night’ is in cinemas now. See the rest of our interview with Sienna Miller below.
