Develop 09: Viral specialist also drops celebrity game hint

Matmi: ‘Unity could replace Flash’

Speaking at the Evolve Strand of the Develop Conference 2009, the founder and creative director of viral specialist Matmi Jeff Coghlan has suggested that Unity may replace Flash as the dominant game engine for small online games.

"We really like Unity," said Coghlan . "Unity could well be the new platform to replace Flash. We didn’t use it to create Monster Pinball on the iPhone, but we are looking into it moving forward, and even thinking about how we can create games there for the Wii."

However, Coghlan still recognised the benefits of Flash as a development platform, and revealed: "We’re still creating Flash games though, and looking at the way we can use Flash games to drive the sales of iPhone games."

In the same session, titled "Infectous: How viral games capture an audience of millions’, Coghlan also hinted: "We are currently working on a product about a very famous pop star who is, shall we say, in the media more than any other at the moment."
