On August 30, 1995, CNN Digital was born. What started as a humble website has since expanded into mobile, apps, social media and more.

Here’s a look back at highlights from a quarter century of delivering the news directly to you, wherever you are.

1995

CNN launches its website on August 30, 1995. Before that, CNN Interactive (as it was then known) was distributed on CDs.

Top stories in 1995 include the murder trial of O.J. Simpson and the end of the Bosnian war after NATO-led peace talks.

2000

Between 1995 and 2000, the site’s name is simplified to “CNN.com.” Like our name, our logo also evolved over the years. Here are a few used by the site over the past 25 years:

2001

A simplified version of the homepage is used for several hours on September 11 to handle the flood of users seeking news about the terrorist attacks.

A low-bandwidth option of the current site is available for users on slow or unreliable connections.

2005

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is a dominant story. Other top stories include the death of Pope John Paul II and the trial of Saddam Hussein.

2008

The United States elects its first Black president, Barack Obama.

CNN.com is awarded the Knight News Innovation Eppy Award from Editor and Publisher magazine.

2009

CNN gets into the app game with the launch of the CNN iPhone app, which also invites readers to send their reports on-the-go to iReport, CNN’s citizen journalist platform.

2010

The rescue of 33 miners in Chile is watched throughout the world. The miners were trapped underground for more than two months. Other top stories include the magnitude 7.0-earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

2013

The bombing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon and subsequent manhunt for suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev dominate US headlines in April.

Pope Benedict XVI announces his retirement, the first for a pope since 1415. Prince William and Duchess Catherine’s first baby, Prince George, is born in the summer.

2015

We unveil a fresh new look for our website, kicking off a busy news year that sees a rise in ISIS terror activity around the globe.

2017

A total solar eclipse captures the nation’s attention. CNN covers the event in real time across a variety of platforms, including a live special in virtual reality.

2020

A global pandemic, civil unrest and an unprecedented election season create a nonstop demand for the latest news, which we deliver across 40+ platforms that include our website, apps, devices and social feeds.
